Strolling down narrow vicoli (alleyways) in il centro di Roma (the center of Rome) on cobblestone streets is like stepping back in time. I sometimes expect to see horse drawn carts meandering amongst the buildings selling produce or housing supplies. There are mobile produce stands, but they are no longer drawn by horses (horsepower, yes, but the actual cavalli, no.) The cobblestones are unevenly spaced and not at all level. They are worn smooth in places that see the most traffic and still rough along the edges of the walkways and streets. Following an afternoon rain, they shine in the sun. After much time observing women walking with narrow heeled shoes that slip along the slick stones or fall between them, I have nicknamed them "hobblestones" in honor of those who hobble along. While wearing heels, one must first place the ball of the foot down and then gently place the heel with care. I do marvel that some women do it with much ease and grace. I, however, am not one of them.
